Calcium for the masses

CALCIUM FOR THE MASSES

Six years ago Jim and Sue Visser started giving calcium and magnesium supplements to family and friends. It soon expanded into a more than profitable hobby and they tried to sell the powder to health shops and pharmacies. People were reluctant to take preventative medicine in those days.

Sue undertook a lot of research into all the diseases that calcium could help to alleviate if not prevent. Osteoporosis fell under the spotlight. One in three ladies seem to get it in later life, but few know how to prevent it. Sue did her bone loading diligently, and in her late forties, her T- score is so far above the plus line that there is no reading for it!

The National Osteoporosis Foundation did not believe that it was wrong, if not downright dangerous to consume large amounts of calcium without magnesium. Furthermore they publicly endorsed a product containing sodium fluoride as a treatment for osteoporosis. Sue had learnt from The Safe Water Foundation that even a daily supplement exceeding 1mg of sodium fluoride could be dangerous, causing genetic damage and even cancer. How could these people recommend doses of over 50 – 75mg a day? She was not the only one who had a bone to pick with the Osteoporosis Foundation.

Many people objected to hormone supplementation, using estrogen to prevent osteoporosis. Ladies were suffering from excessive weight gain and uncomfortable side effects. There was also the threat of cancer. Some of these hormones were being harvested from pregnant mares’ urine in a very cruel way. The consumption of dairy products has now also become a controversial cause of osteoporosis. Who do we believe? If the cows can’t supply the calcium anymore, somebody else has to.

Sue and Jim battled away with their: CALCIUM COMPLEX as it came to be known. Their good friend Bart Schubert of the Health Counter News insisted that Boron had to be included in the formulation. It was no easy mission to have calcium tablets made up, but they persisted. They scoured all the information they could find on the subject, adding Vitamin D3, Vitamin C, tissue salts and other refinements until they had it all together: a way to get calcium to latch onto bone.

Everybody argues about what type of calcium is best and the costs can become exorbitant. They used plain old cheap calcium and adjusted the pH to neutral, or 7. Now all they needed was proof. Without hormones, without dietary changes and without exercise. Could it be done? The “experts” will shake their heads. The results speak for themselves: documented cases of rapid increases in bone density! Maureen Mayes of Rustenberg had a bone scan and osteoporosis was diagnosed. She took 5 of the new tablets a day and a year later, the bone scan at a Wynberg Hospital indicated she was well above the fracture line. X-rays of a lady in her eighties showed healthy new deposits of minerals on her vertebrae within six months of taking the powdered CALCIUM COMPLEX.

The NATURE FRESH research on calcium is called: TEN THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CALCIUM (available on the web) It was first read to Doctors at a seminar on Robben Island in 1998. They began to prescribe the supplement to their patients and many of them take it themselves. The tablets have become so popular that the jars are snapped up by enthusiastic customers as soon as they appear. Production has to be stepped up continually to keep up with the demand. Jim and Sue still take calcium at night, even though they are coated in it all day!
