THE POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME AND OTHER HORMONAL HAZARDS
This is an update, based on the original questions that I was asked. PCOS – the polycystic ovarian syndrome has now run out of control and thousands of desperate women from many parts of the world keep asking me for help.
Prostate problems in men share some of the metabolic pathways of PCOS. They even have the same dietary causes! I hope this new information will inspire men and women to take a closer look at natural ways they can control the activity of DHT (dihydrotestosterone) that causes hormonal havoc, often with fatal results. It can be overcome with diet and supplements!
What are the symptoms of PCOS: the polycystic ovarian syndrome in women?
- Infertility
- Ovarian cysts, many of them, thus it is called: polycystic.
- Hirsutism: beard type hairs growing on the lady’s face
- Aggressive behaviour, deeper voice, moodiness and often depression.
- Loss of insulin sensitivity: syndrome X often results. (weight gain, cholesterol problems type 2 diabetes.).
- Very uncomfortable menstruation: irregular cycles, too long, too short or skipping.
- Bad skin, especially pimples and acne.
- Male type baldness.
- Raised activity of DHT (dihydrotestosterone).
Not all of these symptoms need to be present for a diagnosis of this condition. Some patients only find out when cysts have been detected on their ovaries. This is because symptoms like adult acne, hair falling out, anaemia, infertility, low blood sugar with fatigue and insulin resistance overlap with other symptom pictures. Conditions relating to women with low blood sugar also include menstrual difficulty, fatigue, fuzziness and libido issues. Even ladies with facial hair may not have polycystic ovarian syndrome. This duality often confuses medical practitioners including gynaecologists. Look at each of the symptoms again and see why it is confusing!
1 Infertility can be caused by: low progesterone, malnutrition, emotional disturbances, toxins and parasites.
2 Ovarian cysts can also be caused by unopposed oestrogen or a parasite problem. They may be other types of cysts.
3 Many women pluck out the odd beard hairs, especially during menopause and in some races, eg: South American and Mediterranean ladies it happens at all ages without affecting the ovaries or hormonal status quo.
4 Aggressive behaviour, deeper voice, is often just part of your genetic make up. Depression affects most people.
5 Loss of insulin sensitivity: syndrome X often results. (Weight gain, cholesterol problems, type 2 diabetes.) Syndrome X affects men as well and is due to bad eating habits: too many carbohydrates, fats and kilojoules and a bad lifestyle. This is also a symptom of gluten intolerance.
6 Uncomfortable menstruation: irregular cycles, too long, too short or skipping. These are typical hormonal imbalances and affect women of all ages for different reasons. Often they lack good nutrition. Magnesium and calcium deficiencies.
7 Bad skin, especially pimples and acne. For teenagers, this is usual as hormones emerge, but adults are mostly treated with Isotretinoin (Accutane / Roaccutane by Roche) Complaints of depression, moodiness and weight problems indicate that perhaps the acne is a symptom of a bigger picture and not a side effect of the drug.
8 Male type baldness. With low thyroid activity and post partum hormonal shifts, hair also drops out alarmingly. The balding pattern is often overlooked and may not be connected to DHT activity within the follicle. Now we’re closer!
9 Raised activity of DHT(dihydrotestosterone) This is the most obvious abnormality but to ladies affected by PCOS how do we explain what goes wrong?
PCOS symptoms can also overlap with symptoms of gluten intolerance: Fatigue, Gastrointestinal distress (gas, bloating, diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting, reflux), Headaches (including migraines), Infertility, Weight loss/gain (unstable metabolism), Inability to concentrate, Moodiness/depression, Amenorrhea/delayed menarche (menstrual cycles), Alopecia (hair loss on head), Anaemia, Gall bladder disease, Congested liver, Infertility/spontaneous abortions, Hyperthyroidism/hypothyroidism, Osteoporosis, Pancreatic disorders: Diabetes type 1 and 2. These symptoms are also present when you are affected by microbes and parasites. These symptoms are also from metabolic pH (acidity) upsets and dietary deficiencies!
The formation of DHT occurs the same way in males and females who have these dietary errors:
In adults, the 5-alpha reductase enzyme is usually dormant and seldom affects females, providing their liver is normal and the diet is rich in lean protein and very, very low in carbohydrates. If congested or not healthy, the liver does not break down excess testosterone, so the levels accumulate. If no DHT blockers from dietary zinc and lean protein are present it begins to make DHT. A diet low in protein and with a high carbohydrate (sugar and starch) and fat intake stimulates this dangerous conversion of testosterone to DHT.
When deficient in zinc, any excess testosterone not eliminated by the liver converts to oestrogen and overwhelms the thyroid gland – in males and females! And yes, the metabolism slows down, you get depressed, breasts enlarge, you gain weight through becoming insulin resistant and hair falls out for two reasons: low thyroid function and the receptors for DHT that occur at the top of the head and at the sides in the front become very active, causing male type baldness. (The hair follicles begin to shrink and stop producing hair.)
The lack of zinc is also directly related to adult acne. Due to this increased DHT activity in the liver, testosterone receptors engage in the full spectrum of masculine characteristics. In addition, disrupted hormones like oestrogen and insulin join in the party. Men grow boobs, females grow beards and male prostate glands enlarge. Both become infertile, insulin resistant, fat and frustrated. But still, they eat whacks of bread, cereal, pies, chips and cookies washed down with copious amounts of sugary beverages, hoping that medical miracles packed into capsules are going to save them.
What is the difference between testosterone in males and females?
Females also have testosterone activity and need about 1% of this hormone as compared to males. Ladies do not have testicles, so where is it coming from? The adrenal glands release testosterone and oestrogen in both males and females. It is the different quantities of these two hormones that determine male or female characteristics.
Often a lady may have a lot of testosterone in her bloodstream but is remains bound up by specially adapted proteins to keep her out of trouble. Next is the testosterone receptor that receives the hormone if the protein bond is broken. Testosterone then latches onto the receptor and exerts its influence on her: as and when required. After that, the testosterone is broken down by the liver, ready for excretion or it converts to oestrogen by a process known as aromatisation.
The 5-alpha reductase enzyme that augments the potency of testosterone is dormant in females to prevent DHT (dihydrotestosterone) from being produced. An extra safety margin is provided because the liver immediately starts to break down any excess testosterone. This is the normal way testosterone circulates around the female physique and as such, it is harmless yet energizing and sexy! It is also beneficial in that testosterone can serve as a precursor to oestrogen if needed.
So what goes wrong with the liver?
PCOS and prostate problems are directly connected to your zinc, protein and carbohydrate intake! However, if the liver malfunctions and more testosterone remains in it there is a chance it can be converted into DHT. The enzyme 5-alpha reductase converts testosterone into the more potent DHT needed by males at puberty. A diet of excessive carbohydrates and heavy fats and too little protein and deficient in zinc stimulates the formation of DHT. This is the food connection to unwanted DHT formation: a lazy liver and a lousy diet. The worse we eat, the more our society produces: prostate problems, balding males and ladies with PCOS.
An adequate zinc intake is essential to prostate health and it helps with both male and female acne problems, insulin resistance, hair balding and fertility… To keep the testosterone in firm bondage, add a cupful of fresh pumpkin seeds to the juicer and drink this every day. This protocol has delivered excellent results for many ladies
Apart from hormonal imbalances, are there other causes of cysts on the ovaries?
Some cysts are simply filled with blood and we call them chocolate cysts and they don’t seem to give any trouble. The main problem is definitely parasites in the body like flukes, giarcardia lambellus & gardinella organisms. The latter two are also responsible for the so-called leaky gut syndrome. The situation is compounded by pockets of bacteria and toxic residue that may collect around an ovary. The body tries to enclose the ovary to shut off the resultant invasion, thus forming a cyst. Whatever is now in the cyst can escape the watchful eye of the immune system and expand in peace.
The body reacts by shutting off the production of hormones, or by overproducing them in the wrong amounts. Modern medicine reacts by frantically trying to “balance” the hormones, but never to eliminate the underlying parasites & pathogens. We help bacteria and parasites to be released in our bodies by using chemical solvents in our cosmetics and detergents and by exposing ourselves to benzine and fluorocarbons (from air conditioning and refrigerators).
The more “civilized” we become, the easier it is for parasites to hatch in our bodies as these solvents break open the egg and larval stages prematurely, inside us. Normally they would leave the body via the colon, like in the good old days. Bacteria that is always in the body at any time, can suddenly breed itself into a lethal colony, once it is exposed to various pollutants and metallic particles from our fillings or nickel from our jewellery & cutlery. Reference: The Cure for all Diseases by Hulda Regher Clark p 91, 110, 255, 384.
If parasites can do this to an ovary, then what damage can they do to the uterus?
Endometriosis, fibroids, tumours and manifold miseries result from parasitic invasions in the uterus. They are attracted to solvents in the body and the uterus is no exception. I’m not even talking about the sexually transmitted diseases, that’s another story! Let’s take endometriosis, where bits of the uterine lining are disrupted and even travel to other parts of the body, believe it or not, causing menstrual complications! Do we cut all the pieces out? They will simply come back.
Parasites like the four families of large flukes invade the lining and invite smaller parasites to come and live with them. They eat bits of the uterus and then migrate to other parts of the body and so this helps to explain why uterine tissue “travels”. If pathogens invade the muscular tissue of the uterus, fibroids form. This area is fuelled by anabolic hormones such as estrogen. When we cut back on estrogen, the fibroids cannot grow at such a rate, but the pathogens are still there, safely inside the cyst and evading the immune system that cannot remove any precancerous cells like it usually does. These faulty cells divide rapidly when there is a lot of estrogen about (especially with the lady is taking HRT) We know the rest of the story: the connection between HRT and the increased risk of cancer.
Ecdysteroids from plants or food can convert into estrogen or testosterone: why into testosterone?
1 Too many free (unbound) testosterone molecules in the bloodstream – not sufficiently bound by beta-sitosterol, due to insufficient amounts of binding proteins. ( pumpkin seeds are good sources ) Also a lack of the Delta 5 reductase enzyme in the body.
2 Testosterone receptors are too active
3 Intake of fake steroid hormones. These are known as xenoestrogens and are obtained from foods and the degradation of plastics. Other hormone disrupting chemicals (HDC) are even found in our drinking water! give the wrong signals on testosterone receptors? ( Agnus Castus modifies testosterone receptors )
4 Oxidation of oestrogen precursors. Oestrogen precursors like pregnenelone oxidize, due to a lack of antioxidants in the system. The resultant molecules then favour a testosterone pathway.
5 Insufficient or inactivated enzymes: 5-delta reductase enzyme may not be released from the liver, due to liver overload or congestion or a lack of micronutrients.
Hormone disrupting chemicals
Xenoestrogens are the hormone mimics that we get from plastic and our polluted environment. An estrogen molecule can transmute between the plant (ecdysteroids), animal (from steroid injections and antibiotics) and “plastic” (xenoestrogen) kingdom. Oestrogen can be derived from eating contaminated farm animals such as pigs, chickens and cows that are fattened up with hormones and antibiotics for a greater yield on the flesh market. Some Frenchmen even grew large voluptuous breasts from eating chicken necks. (This is where the chemicals are injected into the chickens.) Zearalenone, is an anabolic uterotropic metabolite that is also given to these animals. It is excreted in animal dung and taken up by crops that are grown in this “organically” enriched soil. This affects grains like wheat, corn, brown rice, etc. so vegetarians are not exempt from this invasion either!
Tap water in Britain was found to have been recycled up to 10 times and hormone levels reach high concentrations as they are not removed from toilet waste. Even freshly harvested fish contains hormone disrupting chemicals from recycled sewerage water, rich with the urine of people who take HRT and birth control pills. Fish out in the ocean are no better off as the plankton they eat contains six times more degraded plastic particles of the same size. This estrogenic disruption confuses their sexual differentiation or makes them infertile.
What is it doing to us? Both males and females are exposed to higher doses of hormone disruptors than they may be aware of. Not everybody can excrete them, let alone control their metabolic pathways because they do not know how to. Thus we are affected by oestrogen and testosterone imbalances that cause conditions like polycystic ovarian syndrome.
What role does the liver play in helping us to control hormonal effects in the body?
Nobody thinks the liver is to blame when they get a hot flush, a headache or their body is sick and tired, but it is usually a liver problem. You see, the liver is actually where excess estrogen has to be broken down and eliminated. Benzene pollution inhibits this process along with a lack of liver nutrients and antioxidants. Then hormones like estrogen and even testosterone get tipped back into the bloodstream. Once the pituitary gland detects these higher levels, it shuts down hormone production. Ironically, the so-called lack of estrogen is thus self inflicted by a faulty liver and thus too much estrogen. The liver is also vulnerable to parasites, especially the liver flukes we get from meat and milk. The liver is responsible for the production and the elimination of most of our metabolic processes and is always the first place to treat when the hot flushes, prostate problems or PCOS set in.
What other hormonal upsets bother women the most?
Excessive estrogen type complaints, especially those on HRT and contraceptive pills: swelling, bloating, thyroid inactive or less active = fatigue, weight gain Uterine fibroids, some very large. Most symptoms abate when estrogen levels are lowered by the use of selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMS) like red clover & black cohosh. Estrogen can also be displaced by increasing the activity of progesterone. This is done by influencing the pituitary gland with stimulants like red sweet potato. The effect is pretty immediate if taken by direct mouth absorption. The wild yam creams directly infuse the body with progesterone and some of them are known to contain synthetic progesterone as well. Wild yam cannot be taken by mouth as it is toxic. Topical application of wild yam is a long-term treatment, taking effect after a few weeks. Some ladies tend to gain weight with extra progesterone.
How are these symptoms being treated medically ?
1.) Diane (cyproterone acetate with estrogen) An anti-androgenic drug. Side effects: emotional problems “ I feel like killing or being killed” Weight gain, sore swollen breasts, (high progesterone levels) bloating. The danger of taking tricyclic antidepressants to alleviate this feeling: Cortisone supplements or drifiting corticosteroids from “adaptogens and other herbal supplements” when taken with tricyclic antidepressants like Prozac can boost levels of prolactin, causing swollen, often leaky breasts and destroying libido. Hirsutism may also result. Blood pressure can elevate and clotting may occur. Too much cortisone elevates blood sugar levels, resulting in insulin insensitivity, weight gain & water retention. Thyroid activity also weakens, causing a sluggish metabolism.
2.) Zoladex (goserelin) pituitary hormone: gonadotropin . Anti – cancer drug for prostate, breast & uterus.
3.) Human gonadotropal hormones: Pergonal & Clomiphene citrate (from postmenopausal womens’ urine)
4.) Provera : progesterone
5.) For males, the popular choice is Finasteride (Propecia and Proscor) Propecia is preferred to treat hair loss or Minoxidil can be used for males and females as it does not affect hormones.
What proposals do you have for naturally approaching the Polycystic ovarian syndrome? Not only for ladies!
An overload of DHT or dihydrotestosterone is unsightly for females, but deadly for men! This protocol for PCOS helps to deactivate the 5-alpha reductase enzyme that makes DHT and causes prostate cancer, balding and adult acne. We welcome men to use this health plan to control testosterone imbalances that may also be troubling them.
The Polycystic ovarian Protocol: 7 short steps to freedom from PCOS (ladies) & DHT (ladies and gents)
1 Prevent oxidation of ingested forms of phytoestrogens and anabolic steroids. Take plenty of antioxidants in supplement form: vitamin A, C and E. Try some of the newer combinations that contain ALA (alphalipolic acid, selenium and herbal compounds. Eat plenty of fresh fruit and make your own juices in the blender every day.
2 Look out for estrogenically active foods: eg: sage, fennel, lentils, whole wheat, etc. They boost hormone levels and can cause swollen breasts, blood clotting and weight gain. Buy the best fresh produce you can. It is hard to say what is clean and what is not. Ideally, we should all have our own vegetable garden. You can grow your own herbs and sprouts. Stay on a simple diet of fresh fruit and vegetables and only eat organic free range meat or eggs.
3 Avoid disruptive grains. We are advised to eat according to our blood type. It makes sense not to overload on disruptive lectins contained in food that cannot be digested by your particular genetic makeup. Lectins are known to impair thyroid activity, cause weight gain and interfere with the immune system.
Many people are gluten intolerant and may not even be aware of it. Anaemia, insulin resistance, irritable bowel, constipation, gas, bloating and especially infertility are top of the list of gluten intolerances. Because they overlap with hormonal imbalances and some symptoms of PCOS you must try to cut out all forms of gluten. Most people find this really helps – sometimes it is surprising what this simple advice can do! To be gluten free you cut out: all wheat (bread, pasta, Pro Vitas, whole wheat too) rye also Ryevita, oats and barley. Substitute with rice, butternut, sweet potato or rice cakes and eat Pro Nutro (soy and maize) or Morvite (sorghum) for breakfast. Try it for a month. If gluten intolerant, you soon get excellent results. PCOS involves insulin resistance and because carbohydrates need to be reduced, if not cut out altogether, it is good to definitely eliminate gluten.
Next comes sugar, and this is obvious. Do not even have another teaspoon! Also forget about sweeteners of natural origin. Your pancreas will still react with a surge of insulin because sweetness is detected on the tongue, regardless of the calories you are having. Blood type O non-secretors as well as the B’s, have a particular problem with sugars and carbohydrates. I find most of the ladies I treat for PCOS are non-secretors of these blood types. For more help, use MEGASLIM with the enclosed diet sheet as it works well with hormonally affected weight problems.
4 Prevent testosterone converting to DHT The 5-alpha reductase enzyme needs to be blocked because it converts harmless testosterone into the hormonally super active dihydrotestosterone: DHT (acne and beard hair!) This can also be done by dietary means! Eating 60% more protein at every meal than carbohydrate will block enzyme activity. Since we are cutting out gluten and reducing starches, this next step is easy.
The best proteins are low fat – especially tuna and fish, lean turkey breast and whey or soya protein; should it suit your blood type. Avoid fatty meats like mutton and beef and cream and butter because they stimulate DHT. Herbal remedies like MEGAMAX contain saw palmetto that also prevents DHT. MEGAMAX also helps to immediately eliminate prolactin, the hormone that causes breasts to swell and get sore. Prolactin also destroys libido and reduces sex drive. Ironically, women with PCOS have imbalances of oestrogen, prolactin and testosterone.
Testosterone is not troublesome or dangerous until it converts to DHT. Women then develop beard hairs, male type balding and often a gruff voice or an abrupt manner. Removing unwanted facial hair is easy with laser therapy. Restoring the receding hairline or circle at the top is more difficult. Zinc supplements can do wonders for androgenic alopecia, reducing beard hair and acne. We shut down DHT with: diet (high protein, low or no carbs) , take zinc (30 -45mg per day) and saw palmetto.
5 Pumpkin seeds to bind up freely circulating testosterone This is a home remedy that really works and has sparked off a lot of interest around the world. Let me tell you the story of my daughter who had a 6cm cyst on her ovary, as confirmed by the Gynaecologist I was doing research work with. After 10 days another scan showed it was gone. I gave her two daily doses of fresh pumpkin seed juice and my Agnus Castus (chaste berry tincture.) Cysts will only develop when DHT levels get out of hand, so freely circulating testosterone and DHT had to be quickly bound up. Pumpkin seeds are rich in betasitosterol and the fresher the better it works.
Pumpkin seed recipe: I used a cup of freshly scooped pumpkin seeds in a blender with a cup of water. The mixture was sieved with a stocking and halved for two daily doses. I got more fresh pips every day from the kitchen where they pack vegetables for the supermarket. You can mix this juice with vitamin C and things like apples, tomatoes, onion or celery to make it taste better. Take the juice in the morning and evening. Take 10 to 20 drops of Agnus Castus tincture at least 2 to 3 x per day for the intensive 10 day period. After that, take 10 drops once only. Over time, the dose can lessen or you can take it according to menstrual upsets or pimples that may reappear.
6 Remove testosterone from receptors. Take the Nature Fresh tincture: Agnus castus (also known as Chaste Berry) helps to relieve many of the symptoms of PCOS. It is excellent for irregular menstrual cycles and many ladies soon fall pregnant even after being barren for many years. It is one of the only remedies for persistent pimples, especially on the neck and between the breasts. It can be applied topically as well as taken internally. This remedy prevents testosterone from binding to receptors and imposing undesirable androgenic features on women. It can be taken with other treatments.
7 Block testosterone receptors. Extracts of NETTLE ROOT block testosterone receptors, thus keeping the evil effects of DHT at by. Ask for capsules at the health shop. Prevention is better than cure. I add it to the salt cellar! DHT is very active on the scalp, in the hair follicles at the temples and at the top (Male baldness areas) DHT causes hair follicles to shrivel up and die, thus the hair falls out. If caught in time, the application of nettle root, zinc and Saw palmetto to the scalp in these areas should be able to inhibit speedy balding in younger people. Remember the old folk recipe for a hair rinse, made from nettles. It makes sense, and is worth a try. Perhaps add nettle and Saw palmetto powder to a hair gel and really rub it in every day? So far, I have not seen anybody do this, but it won’t do any harm.
8 Clean out your liver to break down & excrete the excessive hormones. Vegetarian ladies are better able to clear their systems of steroid hormones and cholesterol because they eat more fibre and their livers are cleaner and healthier. The liver dismantles hormonal components, even DHT metabolites and “burns” them up and excretes the harmless residue. When the liver is full of toxins and congested with a backlog of poorly digested, let alone cumbersome substances it cannot perform this vital function. It cannot even eliminate cancer cells.
As soon as you can: do the 2 day LIVER and GALLBLADDER FLUSH as described step by step on our website. It takes a few days and will set you well on your way to overcoming the symptoms and discomforts of PCOS. This method works. It is safe, natural and very effective and will keep you looking beautiful and feeling on top of the world. Afterwards, take Milk Thistle supplements if your liver is taking strain or you have had hepatitis or some liver disease.
Please share these notes with other PCOS and BPH (prostate) sufferers.
