Inflammation is a leading cause of heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and weight gain.
Radio talk outline with research links. October 2018 with Zulaikha and Sue
Q: Sue, how is inflammation linked to diabetes, body fat and weight gain?
We have often spoken about insulin resistance and how it leads to higher levels of sugar in the blood, plus high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Eating fat does not cause this to happen – it has more to do with eating foods high in sugar and carbohydrates. The accumulation of excessive body fat especially in the abdomen, causes continuous (chronic), low levels of abnormal inflammation that alters insulin’s action and contributes to the disease.
As type 2 diabetes starts to develop, the body becomes less sensitive to insulin and the resulting insulin resistance and high blood sugar contributes to inflammation and the production of extra cytokines – inflammatory chemicals. They interfere with our ability burn fat, so we store it instead. The fat – plus extra inflammatory chemicals packs around the waistline. Fat cells swell up with water thus and weight gain is guaranteed!
Q: Does emotional stress also affect inflammation?
Yes, emotional stress and anger can also increase levels of cytokines, the chemicals we associate with inflammation. It’s unknown whether stress by itself can contribute to the development of diabetes, though. Stress hormones like adrenalin and cortisone increase blood sugar and if the stress is continuous the high blood sugar becomes a problem.
If one is deficient in magnesium, zinc, chrome and other nutrients that produce insulin the blood sugar can attack our blood vessels, causing damage that increases homocysteine levels. People with cardiovascular disease and cholesterol problems have high homocysteine levels. Stress also increases sugar cravings and often people who are stressed out tend to avoid exercise.
Q: So are you saying that exercise, proper nutrition and sugar avoidance can prevent inflammation?
Yes, indeed because diet and exercise are always recommended for treating inflammation. Today many popular weight loss strategies focus on reducing inflammation. Eating food that does not suit you as an individual can increase inflammation that sets off an autoimmune reaction. When this happens the body begins to attack its own organs and tissues. This causes an extreme form of inflammation and is generally caused by dietary lectins and parasites.
When the diet does not suit your blood type, the offending foods cause inflammation. For instance, arthritis is connected to eating foods from the deadly nightshade family: potatoes, tomatoes, aubergines and green peppers. But not everybody – only blood type A! But for blood type O and B the major cause of inflammation comes from wheat – plus in many cases gluten.
Q: Sue, you mentioned parasites. How can parasites cause inflammation?
Thirty percent of our parasites live in the digestive system. The remaining 70 percent are in the blood and body organs, which includes the eyes and the brain and sinus cavities. We know about large parasites like tapeworms that rob us of nutrition and excrete their waste inside us. With malnutrition and accumulated toxins as a result, we lack the necessary vitamins, enzymes and minerals to undertake our normal metabolic activitie. It is harder to control blood sugar (to diabetes), than to detoxify and maintain a healthy immune system. But the smaller entities such as giardia and gardnerella lambis are far more dangerous because they cause the infamous leaky gut syndrome.
People who have been attacked by these parasites suffer from extreme inflammation because offending particles that normally stay inside the intestines leaks out into the bloodstream. Then the immune system flares up, trying to deal with the foreign particles in the bloodstream.
When the gut health is disrupted and inflamed it cannot make our feel good chemicals such as serotonin and oxytocin. We get depressed, crave more sugar and soon we are overwhelmed by a yeast overgrowth. This happens when we are deficient in probiotics, the friendly bacteria that control candida. Now the problem is exacerbated by more families of microbes – fungus and mould. More inflammation, depression and an overactive immune system are the result.
Parasites invade our joints and muscles, causing pain and inflammation. We may be misdiagnosed as having arthritis when in fact the pain, heat and swelling is caused by the parasite toxins that gather in the muscle tissue and joints. They make them very acidic and so calcium is leeched out of the bone. This causes calcification and spurs, with more pain and inflammation.
Q: with so many causes of inflammation, is it wise to take anti-inflammatory drugs as a first option?
We know the true answer. It is definitely better to treat the cause. However, with extreme, temporary episodes of pain and inflammation such as after a heavy session at the dentist, an injury or an insect bite we need to take an anti-inflammatory drug. For long term inflammation caused by a parasite it makes more sense to treat the parasite. When it comes to leaky gut problems, no cortisone or anti-inflammatory drug will stop the continuous flow of annoying parasites.
If gluten or an unsuitable food such as tomatoes or whatever else is causing a blood type conflict is consumed as a regular staple food, the inflammation will continue. Another problem with these medications is the side effect. Viox has now been taken off the market because it was killing people. 500 000 deaths have been linked to this anti-inflammatory drug. How many of them could have been prevented with an alternative protocol?
Q: We need to seriously pursue an alternative anti-inflammatory protocol. What do you suggest?
1.) Eat what suits you best. It stops food related reactions. Look at the blood type diet, especially your secretor status.

2.) Follow an anti-inflammatory diet. Eat more anti-inflammatory oils such as Omega 3 from fish. Reduce omega 6 fats and especially arachidonic acid. It sets off inflammation, despite the “Banting” claims. Large amounts of pro-inflammatory arachidonic acid are present in butter and the fat from animals. If inflammation persists, then cut down on saturated fat and increase Omega 3 and olive oil. Avoid excessive sugar.
3.) Get rid of parasites. https://naturefresh.co.za/parasites-and-pathogens/
4.) Deal with stress. Get those cortisol levels down and balance your blood sugar with sensible snacks.
5.) Take probiotics and improve the health of your bowel. Leaky gut treatment includes controlling parasites.
6.) Exercise, exercise, exercise. Nobody has ever complained to me of an overdose of exercise. If you feel an aversion to exercise it may be your thyroid. Try boosting your thyroid with Lugol’s iodine. Remember that doctor’s blood tests always come back as normal.
