THE NATURE FRESH GUIDE TO INTIMATE HYGIENE
By Sue Visser
Products for dry skin and hair are easy to buy. Intimate hygiene is another story.
When you buy tampons or condoms a suitable lubricant, deodorant or vaginal cleanser is not always at hand. Until now. NATURE FRESH is always on the lookout for ways to help people and we have attended to appeals from the public as well as doctors, gynecologists and pharmacists to develop an affordable range of intimate hygiene products. These unique new personal lubricants and vaginal cleansers are already proving to be effective in relieving all kinds of itches, dryness, rashes odours and discomforts that most people are too embarrassed to complain about.
WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO TREAT GENITAL DRYNESS, DISCOMFORT AND IRRITATIONS?
Certain inner areas of the female genital tract are lined with a sensitive mucous lining. The outer regions, known as the labia are not. Although Nature has equipped this area with lubricating glands, they do not always provide adequate secretions at certain times of the month or as we get older. Other causes are due to wearing tight synthetic clothing or upsets from hormonal imbalances, contraceptive devices, pH imbalances or due to fungal or herpes infestations. Dry, itchy, inflamed tissue causes unnecessary discomfort and pain. Sometimes going to the toilet is unbearable, as burning urine and sensitivity to toilet paper take an additional toll. All the new Nature Fresh products are pH compatible with the vaginal mucosa, which is acidic at 3,5 – 4. When this delicate balance is restored, many of the problems associated with odours and irritations are alleviated.
By not using any greasy, petrochemically based or alkaline products in the vagina, the mucous can function as it should, to provide the inner areas with a protective coating. The personal lubricants provide additional water based lubricating substances that are compatible with the body and do not interfere with its homeostasis to cause the odour or irritations that foreign chemicals may cause. NATURE FRESH lubricants are not only for sex. They are versatile products and can be used every day by men, women and children who have specific problems relating to personal hygiene such as: going to the toilet, using tampons or recovering from anal or genital surgery.
HOW NATURE FRESH CAN HELP YOU COPE WITH PARTICULAR PERSONAL HYGIENE PROBLEMS
GOING TO THE TOILET – PILES,POST-OP CARE, BURNING URINE, MENSTRUATION & CLEANLINESS
Regular applications of the lubricants will help to provide a nature identical type of mucous to soothe and protect troubled areas in the genital and anal area. As we cannot hop into a bath every time we go to the toilet or wash ourselves, we usually have to rely on toilet paper. The personal lubricant can be applied to toilet paper or cotton wool to swab the area before and after going to the toilet if you are suffering from burning urination or need extra cleansing during menstruation or after surgery.
The fragrance free gel is hypoallergenic and suitable for very sensitive people. It is free from paraben based preservatives, colouring, essential oils and fragrance. The Tea tree gel is better for infections as Tea Tree oil is an effective treatment for fungal and minor bacterial infestations. Apply the lubricant to the tip of a tampon before inserting it for extra comfort. Additional tea tree oil as well as other medications can be mixed into the gel before it is spread onto the tampon if your practitioner advises you to do so for the treatment of thrush.
VAGINAL DRYNESS : THE HUSBANDS ALSO COMPLAIN
When vaginal lubrication is inadequate during sex, it causes many problems. Instead of having a “headache” or avoiding the issue, some women complain to their health practitioners and others suffer in silence. Often Hormonal Replacement Therapy is prescribed to help ladies cope with vaginal dryness and the outcome is not always guaranteed.
Some forms of HRT increase the risk of cancer and the alleviation of vaginal dryness may take many months. It is not a good idea to risk one’s life for sex, so we need to seek a safer alternative that has an immediate effect. There are a number of lubricants on the market. Some ladies are allergic to all of them. The insertion of a Vitamin E capsule at night for a few weeks is a natural method recommended by Dr Marilyn Glenville as well as including more vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids in our diets.
The three NATURE FRESH lubricants are an instant and very safe solution to vaginal dryness. They are hypoallergenic with a water based, nature identical formulation. The Fragrance Free gel is for extreme sensitivity, the Tea Tree gel is a medicated version and Wild Rose is wickedly sensuous. The Damask Rose and Sandalwood fragrances are Kama Sutra ( ancient Indian) aphrodisiacs and contain pheromones that activate a primitive arousal in males and females. You have been warned ! A delightful way to revive your sex life without the need for three hours of foreplay!
VAGINAL ODOUR: HOW TO ALLEVIATE THE PROBLEM FOR GOOD
As the vagina is the butt of many jokes about fish, you may be interested to know the cause of such remarks. The optimal vaginal pH is acidic at 3,5-4. That’s even more acidic than your skin. After sex, the pH rises to 7, or neutral. It remains at 7 for at least 10 hours, then returns to an acidic level. Bathing before and after sex with very alkaline soaps (pH 9- 11) and coping with sperm(pH 10) causes an alkaline onslaught to the vagina and makes it prone to bacterial infections and unnatural odours. As the bacteria multiplies and mixes with other alkaline favouring infections such as candida, the problem is exacerbated.
People laugh in disbelief when yoghurt is recommended for painful vaginas. At a ph of 4, yoghurt can help restore the natural pH , but NATURE FRESH personal lubricants at pH 3,5-4 are easier to use. For washing, bathing, showering or douching, the NATURE FRESH VAGINAL CLEANSERS are also pH compatible. The Rooibos cleanser is gentle and soothing and the Tea tree cleanser helps to deodorise and protect us from fungal and bacterial infections. These products are suitable to use for normal washing. A mild solution can be used in a douche, but only with the permission of your health practitioner. These products are free from perfume and colouring.
VAGINAL DISORDERS
By Sue Visser
Even if you have a bad infection and are taking medications, you can improve your condition by following these natural guidelines for intimate health. Choose products you can afford and be strict about your eating habits, food supplements and personal hygiene.
Always check with your medical practitioner if symptoms are persistent or alarming or if you are not sure of the best treatment. This information is not intended as medical advice and the steps you take are at your own risk, so first ask your doctor, especially if you are pregnant, diabetic or prone to high blood pressure.
The causes and cures of vaginal disorders will be discussed in detail. Leading gynecologists, doctors and alternative health practitioners have been consulted to make this information as accurate and helpful as possible.
As vaginal discomfort is a very personal issue, many ladies are too shy to discuss their problems openly. Neglect, incorrect treatment and a faulty diagnosis can lead to a more serious condition that may persist for many years. These afflictions affect many women, sometimes a few times a year. If they receive immediate attention further discomfort, inflammation and secondary infections can be avoided. Fortunately we have many effective medications as well as alternative remedies and natural treatments to help us.
Natural techniques can be used in conjunction with prescription medications or pharmaceutical products recommended by your pharmacist or doctor. It is always best to discuss a new treatment with your doctor. A special anti-inflammatory diet and food supplements are of great benefit to anybody who suffers from chronic or recurrent vaginal problems.
A healthy and well nourished body is better at dealing with the infections, allergies, inflammation, depression and fatigue that a debilitating gynecological disorder may be causing. If a current condition has not been responding well to treatment you may find some of the following suggestions very helpful. Common vaginal disorders affect just about every lady we know at some or other time. It is comforting to know that they are seldom symptomatic of a major infection and there are many safe, natural alternative ways to treat and prevent them.
Drugs and herbal or homeopathic prescriptions alone cannot alter your lifestyle, change your attitude, give you fresh air and exercise, improve your diet, correct nutritional deficiencies, or use a condom for you. It is beyond the scope of the average medical consultation to deal with every aspect of your health in a single visit.
You alone can make these changes. Your task will be much easier if you can take the appropriate action and choose suitable remedies. A comfortable sex life is not possible when a vaginal problem is present. You and your partner may become frustrated. Especially if you both have been infected with a venereal disease. In such cases, you can both benefit from the dietary advice and many of the natural remedies that are suggested.
Severe infections have to be identified by a qualified health practitioner and specific tests and medications may be required. Make absolutely sure that you are not ignoring an infection. Sexually transmitted diseases (STD) need immediate treatment as some of the organisms responsible for causing them are very dangerous and can be transmitted even before you are showing symptoms such as: vaginal burning, rashes, pustules, discharge or abdominal pain. Watch out for unexplained fevers, trembling, fatigue, depression or nausea especially if you have been careless in your sexual habits. If you are not sure, seek professional help. Even if you cannot afford a doctor, go to your local clinic for free treatment and advice. Your sexual partner may also need attention.
When it comes to sex, a headache is an easy way to ignore the problem but an aspirin is not going to solve it. There are many powerful modern drugs that can eradicate infections, but medicine alone cannot prevent and alleviate all of the discomfort. A little common sense, a good diet and a few natural remedies can make a big difference to your intimate well being as well as your health in general.
THE CAUSES AND CURES OF COMMON DISORDERS OF THE VULVA, VAGINA & CERVIX
The vagina resembles a tube that connects the cervix or door of the womb to the vulva or inner and outer labia: the folds of tissue that enclose the entrance to the vagina. These regions can be affected by a number of disorders that often seem more alarming than they actually are. Most ladies refer to this whole group of organs as the vagina but this is not correct. The cervix and vagina are always covered with a mucous lining that keeps them moist but the outer labia do not have this lining. Vaginal dryness usually refers to insufficient lubrication of the vulva from special secretory glands, usually caused by hormonal imbalances or a reaction to soaps, chemicals or tight clothing.
One or more of these factors can upset the homeostasis of a healthy vagina
INCORRECT WASHING HABITS
Excessive douching or washing with alkaline soaps and bubble baths causes the vaginal cavity to become too alkaline. Some commercial cleansers contain iodine or other chemical disinfectants you may not be able to tolerate. The use of broad spectrum antibacterial agents that contain Triclosan will kill off natural friendly bacteria and also cause more resistant strains of infection to mutate and breed. Weakened, inflamed skin encourages bacterial and fungal infections to multiply very quickly. Harsh cleansing also removes the lubricating secretions from the outer labia, leaving them dry, sensitive and itchy. The problem is made worse by the use of vaginal sprays and other deodorants that may inflame sensitive skin and upset the acidic pH balance.
CURE: Although we are told not to use soap, this may be difficult to avoid in a bath. It is better to use a special acid based cleanser for all baths and showers. You can acidify your bath with a few spoons of cider vinegar or lemon juice and add a bit of salt. If the vulva is inflamed, apply a natural Vitamin E cream that contains Calendula and herbal oils after a bath to make yourself more comfortable. You can also use a mild gel based personal lubricant. Apply more during the day if the skin is irritated. Avoid mineral oils as they are absorbed into your body via the skin. Inorganic oils such as those present in aqueous cream, bath oils or petroleum jelly or baby oils rob the body of oil based vitamins such as Vitamins A, D and E. These are important vitamins for maintaining healthy skin.
Vaginal pH: The vaginal cavity is acidic
With a pH of between 3,5 and 4, it is as acidic as yoghurt. Most soaps are very alkaline at a pH of 10. Even water has a pH of 7, or neutral. Menstrual blood has a pH of 7,4 so it is alkaline. The vagina cannot maintain it’s acidity during the menstrual cycle, hence the odour problem. It takes over eight hours for the vagina to return to the normal acidic level after sex because semen is very alkaline at a pH of 8 to10. This explains why washing with an alkaline soap is not going to expel odours for very long. Until the vagina maintains a pH of 3,5 the odour producing bacteria will keep on growing.
CURE: A healthy vagina does not have an unpleasant smell and does not require soapy washes, douches or perfumed talcs and deodorants that may be aggravating the condition. Use a specially formulated acid based vaginal cleanser or add cider vinegar or lemon juice to your bath or bidet water. Only douche(deep cleanse the vagina and cervix with a special apparatus) if you are advised to by your doctor to treat a specific infection.
CAUSE:Contraceptives and hormonal imbalances
Oral contraceptives can cause vaginal inflammation in some people. Hormonal imbalances can be responsible for occasional bleeding and spotting that may be coming from the womb (the endometrial lining of the uterus) and not the vagina. A gynecologist should attend to this problem. Excess estrogen over long periods of time causes thin, sensitive skin to develop, especially in vaginal tissue. In older women, skin from the vulva can adhere to toilet tissue and cause bleeding.
Dryness of the vulva is due to hormonal deficiencies during and after the menopause when the secretion of natural lubricants is diminishing. One is more prone to infections just prior to menstruation when estrogen and progesterone levels are at their lowest or at menopause when the protective vaginal mucous is not so active or it becomes too alkaline.
CURE: If the problem persists ask your doctor to correct these imbalances or find alternatives that do not have adverse side effects. If you wish to use natural hormone balancers, stimulants and supplements, there are a variety of herbal tinctures, creams and tablets on sale that can boost levels of estrogen and progesterone in a more natural way. Over 300 plants can contribute to estrogen activity in the body. Soya, flax seeds, citrus fruits, lentils, whole grains, etc. are found in many foods. Extracts from yams and soy beans form the molecular base of most commercial hormone supplements although some of them are made out of pigs’ ovaries or mares’ urine.
Natural hormone stimulants include: Agnus castus, Black and Blue Cohosh, Hops, Sarsaparilla, Mexican yam and many others. Additional benefits often include: better sleep, relief from headaches, hot flashes, fatigue, depression, obesity, etc. They work best in conjunction with the ANTI-INFLAMMATORY DIET diet, food supplements and exercise. A dry vagina or vulva is not automatically an excuse to use start taking HRT.(hormone replacement therapy) Start by using a good lubricant whilst you wait for the natural techniques to take effect. Often a Vitamin E capsule will alleviate dryness. Insert it right up the vagina every night for three weeks. It works for most ladies. Read the book: Natural Alternatives to HRT by Dr Marilyn Glenville.
CAUSE: Inter-uterine devices (IUD)
The body often tries to fight the foreign device and an alerted immune system causes tissue inflammation, especially in the vaginal area as well as sporadic discharges of blood or heavy bleeding and cramps in the uterus.
CURE: Ask if the device can be removed or a new one can be fitted of a smaller size or different type. Raspberry leaf tea or tablets help to soothe away piercing uterine cramps. The tissue salt : MAG PHOS is a good antispasmodic and FERRUM PHOS has an anti-inflammatory action. You may be intolerant to all types of IUD’S.
CAUSE: Anti-biotics
Fungal infections thrive when the natural balance of pro biotic substances in the body has been disturbed. A candida albicans infection such as vaginal thrush occurs frequently after anti-biotics are taken. This white fungus (usually always present) grows profusely and adheres to the walls of the vagina, causing excessive itching and burning. The inner and outer labia become red and swollen and very painful as the roots grow into tissues.
CURE: Take natural probiotic supplements or lots of yoghurt. Adhere to the ANTI-INFLAMMATORY diet and supplements but also avoid foods that contain yeast such as bread, wine and beer until you overcome the infection. Many people take caprilitic acid or special candida medications and Vitamin E supplements are very effective. As en emergency measure yoghurt is applied to the area and rinses of 5ml cider vinegar and 50ml salt in a litre of water do help. Salt kills yeast and an acidic vaginal pH does not favour its proliferation. Soothe the vulva with a natural cream or gel to which salt has been added.
CAUSE: Weakened immune system
If the body is unable to fight off foreign invaders, many viral, bacterial, fungal or parasitic infections can affect not only the vagina, but the digestive tract as well as other organs. A weakened immune system makes one very prone to sexually transmitted diseases which affect the vagina, causing inflammation, purulent discharges, ulcerous sores, rashes, bleeding, bad odours, sensitivity and a lot of pain.
CURE: The ANTI-INFLAMMATORY DIET helps to boost immunity. Extra vitamin C and herbal remedies like: Echinachea, Hypoxis and natural sterols and sterolins are popular immune fortifiers. There is a danger of over stimulating a weak body and this can cause an auto-immune condition, giving rise to more inflammation. It is best to fortify the diet with more protein, fresh fruit and vegetables and adequate vitamins and minerals as well.
CAUSE: Food intolerance and allergies
Food that does not agree with you can make the body react in strange ways. Some foods or additives cause asthma, skin rashes or emotional disturbances. Rashes can also break out in the vagina. Liquid amino acid supplements can cause a nasty rash in the vaginal area.
CURE: The irritation subsides as soon as the offending substance is no longer consumed. Apply a soothing cream or gel for immediate relief.
CAUSE: Urinary infections
Cystitis and the sensation of burning urine can affect the vagina, especially if the urethra and urethral opening and surrounding tissues are inflamed or become infected.
CURE: Homoeopathic Cantharis drops work miracles with urinary burning, but check up with the doctor if you suspect a more serious infection. Apply a barrier cream such as zinc and castor oil ointment to areas that cause burning before you urinate and afterwards use a lubricating gel on cotton wool or tissues to cleanse gently.
CAUSE: Sex lubricants, aphrodisiacs and playthings
Some adventurous lovemaking products may not agree with you. The exotic perfumes could irritate your vagina as may plastic devices that might cause a nasty scrape, tear or friction rash if they are not sufficiently lubricated. Pain and inflammation the following day will indicate what the culprit may have been. Cantharis is derived from a toxic insect known as Spanish fly. It is used to irritate the genital area in the hopes of arousing a fiery passion but the inflammation may continue for a few days, causing discomfort.
CURE: Soothe the resulting irritations and find safer ways to arouse your partner. Try a bubble bath(using a safe product that is pH balanced) Try out new essential oils as aphrodisiacs and light candles.(Do not insert the candles!) Take up yoga. Interesting postures are a unique turn on and the exercises strengthen pelvic muscles.
CAUSE: Diseases
Side effects from diseases such as diabetes can give rise to severe vaginal inflammation because high levels of sugar in the urine produce more acidity than usual. Auto- immune diseases can also cause vaginal inflammation when the immune system is out of control. Taking immune boosters such as Echinacea may over stimulate a sensitive immune system especially if a stressed lifestyle and nutritional deficiencies are contributing factors. Having sex with an infected partner increases the risk of contracting sexually transmitted organisms that result in vaginal disorders and prevent sexual enjoyment for many months or even years.
CURE: Urinary acidity can be reduced with sodium citrate, calcium and magnesium supplements and the tissue salt: NAT PHOS. Diabetes needs to be controlled to reduce the urinary sugar levels. Protect yourself from possible infection by insisting on condoms if you are sexually active and change partners frequently.
CAUSE: Product reactions
Sensitivity to toilet paper, tampons, synthetic fibres, detergents and tight clothing: Chemicals used to treat toilet paper can cause vaginal irritation. Wearing tight underwear when it is hot or sitting in a cramped position, eg: whilst travelling for too long can also cause vaginal chafing and a rash. Some ladies are sensitive to the fibres that tampons are made of. If a tampon is left in too long, especially when the menstrual flow is not heavy it can irritate the vagina. Contact dermatitis will affect any part of the body that is exposed to harsh detergents, chemicals, medications heavily chlorinated swimming pool water or undiluted essential oils such as Tea tree oil. Those with inflamed skin are even more vulnerable.
CURE: Change brands of products that cause a reaction and avoid exposure to irritating substances. Use cotton wool with lubricating gel instead of toilet paper and lubricate a tampon with gel before inserting it. Wear long flowing skirts and loose fitting cotton underwear if you travel long distances. Tight pants were never designed to be kind to the genitals and the seams of jeans and stringy underwear can creep into the folds of the vulva. Sweat, vigorous exercise and dancing makes it worse. Adam and Eve would not have had these problems!
CAUSE: Dietary deficiencies
Believe it or not, your diet can affect your vagina. Adequate vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids maintain the health and strength of all the tissues and membranes in your body. Areas that are covered in mucous membranes have to be kept healthy as they are prone to infection from exposure to the air, water and many other foreign substances. Vaginal tissue has to deal with quite robust activity from time to time.
CURE: Cut down on the junk foods and try the ANTI-INFLAMMATORY DIET. It will benefit your whole body.
CAUSE: Emotional or psychological problems
A persistent vaginal condition can be a way of avoiding sex and using a medical reason as an excuse. Even a curable disorder could be prolonged or exaggerated. Victims of rape and sexual abuse may react like this or there could be an underlying psychological reason or an unexplained loss of libido. A vaginal problem (whether real or invented) can also be used as an excuse to not have sex as a form of revenge or to hide infidelity. Being too busy, too tired or away a lot at night are warning symptoms.
CURE: Seek a sympathetic practitioner you can confide in and learn to be honest with yourself. The first step in a sexual advance is usually the most difficult to take if you are resisting it. Remember that sex should be about loving and being loved. Try to forgive yourself and your partner and discuss the problem openly and honestly. If it depresses you, try taking St John’s Wort (Hypericum) It works like prozac and could elevate your mood. As soon as dopamine and testosterone levels drop, so does your libido. Try Agnus Castus (a herbal tincture) if you are approaching menopause as it can stimulate the pituitary gland release more sex hormones.
CAUSE:Prostaglandin imbalances
All tissues in the body, including those of the vagina have programmed responses that are produced by prostaglandins or messengers. Certain groups of them are responsible for creating or reversing the effects of inflammation associated with: swelling, itching, heat (fever and hot flushes), redness (erythema) and pain. They also play a major role in controlling the effects of premenstrual disorders. These substances act like hormones and are called PGE1, PGE2 & PGE3.
PGE2 produces an inflammatory response. Stress, infection and dietary imbalances cause large amounts of it to circulate in the body. PGE1 and PGE3 are the good guys and their action is to reverse the inflammation. To enhance their effectiveness, and to reduce adverse reactions anywhere in the body, a special diet must to be followed and all the appropriate food supplements should be taken in larger quantities than the RDA until the inflammation subsides.
Good nutrition is a healthy way to naturally boost your immune system, your hormone output and balance your prostaglandins to control inflammation. When treating vaginal disorders this way, you will benefit by having a much healthier body in every respect as well as a better sex life.
SYMPTOMS OF VAGINAL DISORDERS AND NATURAL WAYS TO COPE
BURNING, ITCHING, RASHES AND SWELLING OF THE VULVA
First check through the list of common causes and take the appropriate action. Then use these suggestions for relief:
CLEANSING: rinse the area in a weak solution of cider vinegar and salty water. Rooibos, echinachea, hypericum, calendula or suitable herbal teas make excellent rinsing and douching agents, especially when acidified with a few drops of lemon juice, cider vinegar and a spoon or two of salt. Never use bicarb or alkaline soaps as the vagina must remain acidic. Special acidic cleansing solutions are available and Nature Fresh make a herbal vaginal cleanser with Tea tree Oil or a milder Rooibos formulation. It can also be used every day in the bath and shower for general use or diluted to 5ml per cup of warm water if a douche is required.
You can buy a special apparatus from the pharmacy called a Whirling Spray, made by the manufacturers of Barum enema’s. If you cannot find one, a baby’s enema or a large syringe without the needle will have to do. Only douche the vagina if your practitioner recommends it. Ladies are often confused about using soap. Keep it away from the vaginal cavity, but it can be used on the vulva or outer region. If you are not sure, use a product that is compatible for both areas.
SOOTHING: Pat yourself dry and apply a Calendula or Vitamin E cream to areas that are red and sore. A natural lubricating gel can also be applied frequently to stop itching and chafing. Nature Fresh make a mild gel with Tea Tree oil for infected areas or use their hypoallergenic Natural Personal Lubricant. These gels can be used throughout the day for interim cleansing when applied to cotton wool and used after going to the toilet, especially during menstruation.
REDUCING THE SWELLING: Inflammation can be reduced by taking Cantharis Compound Drops by Weleda. It has an anti-histamine action. Take a few drops directly on the tongue or in a glass of water. The tissue salt FERRUM PHOS reduces inflammation. You can suck four tablets every half hour until the pain subsides and then take them at longer intervals. Follow the ANTI-INFLAMMATORY PROGRAMME for long term relief.
STOPPING THE PAIN: Some people find that ice packs help reduce the pain and swelling. Pour water onto a sanitary pad, wrap it in a waterproof plastic bag and freeze it. If this works, make a few more so you can exchange them. Take a painkiller as a last resort or ask the pharmacy for a topical anaesthetic such as Xylotox or Lignocainne.
WEEPY SORES, OOZING PUS, ULCERATIONS AND VERY SENSITIVE LESIONS
These conditions are due to infections which should be diagnosed and treated by a doctor. In cases of recurrent Herpes, long term treatment with cream containing L-lysine (an amino acid) seems to prevent the sores from appearing again in the same place. The whole area must be covered in cream daily especially if a new outbreak of sores is starting. Taking a L-lysine supplement is recommended as well as following the ANTI-INFLAMMATORY PROGRAMME. For weepy infected sores, use the medications that are given to you by the doctor. Herbal creams containing calendula can also help. Some people swab with diluted tinctures of calendula and echinachea or use herbal teas. Herbs like plantain (ribwort) , rooibos and comfrey are very soothing. Use the advice in the previous paragraph to treat pain and swelling and try not to wear tight pants and synthetic fabrics.
ULCERATION OF THE MUCOUS MEMBRANES: Lesions that resemble Herpes but do not respond to treatment may need further investigation. Ulceration of the mouth and vagina accompanied by candida, a white coated tongue, joint pains, fatigue and anxious or irrational behavior may indicate Bechet’s Syndrome. These symptoms are similar to the Homeopathic remedy: MERCURIUS SOLUBIDIS. (Merc.Sol.) in potencies of 6c to 200c . Consult a Homeopath. If mercury poisoning is suspected, investigate exposure to herbicides, pesticides or recent metal (amalgam) fillings. Acidic foods, fruit juice or dry wine can affect amalgam and minute quantities of heavy metals may have been consumed. Especially if symptoms are aggravated after drinking lemon juice or wine for many hours at a time.
ABNORMAL VAGINAL DISCHARGES
The shedding of vaginal tissue produces a residue on underwear. It can appear a few times a month, but if no unusual odour or colour is present and it is not profuse, the discharge is normal. Eating certain foods rich in amino acids can cause a different effect, especially: bean sprouts, alfalfa, garlic, chillies and certain curry spices. If you are eating a lot of these foods and stop for a few days, this unusual odour or discharge will disappear and there should be no more cause for alarm. If no itching, swelling, inflammation, odour or redness of the vulva is present then a small discharge is not abnormal or a sign of a serious infection.
The following discharges, accompanied by vaginal irritation indicate the presence of an infection:
Thick white clots that look like cream cheese
A creamy white discharge is known as leucorrhea. The Candida Albicans fungus is always present in vaginal mucous and if it proliferates, a white curdy type of residue may occur but it usually does not have a bad odour. If large amounts develop it may indicate a Candida infection known as Thrush where yeast like organisms begin to take over. This may happen after a course of antibiotics when friendly bacteria or probiotics have been eradicated. Candida can grow on the sides of the vulva, the vagina and the cervix as well as in other parts of the body like the mouth and digestive tract. Roots of this fungus grow into the upper layers of skin and mucous tissue, causing pain, inflammation and itching.
A profuse discharge
Enough to require wearing a sanitary towel between periods. You may also be having griping pains, intermittent fevers, nausea and feel weak, depressed and listless. Seek medical help immediately.
An offensive discharge
With a putrefying smell and a change of colour to yellow or a darker colour. It may become foamy and be streaked with blood and be accompanied by vaginal inflammation, painful intercourse and difficulty in urinating. Seek medical help.
These symptoms indicate the need for medical treatment. There may be a uterine infection or the presence of a sexually transmitted disease (STD). A number of tests are available for identification of the organisms that could be a virus, bacteria or protozoa. These infections should be caught in their early stages so that irreversible damage to the reproductive system and the rest of the body does not occur. Patent drugs and antibiotics are used to eradicate most of these conditions but some of the strains have become resistant to treatment. Special diets, herbal remedies and food supplements can also help. Many of these diseases can be prevented and a healthy immune system is the best line of defence along with taking precautions when having sex with a number of casual partners. One should not only rely on condoms as the AIDS virus is 70 times smaller than a sperm cell. STD organisms are also transmitted via blood and saliva in many cases and the herpes virus is extremely contageous.
Early symptoms of common sexually transmitted diseases
AIDS
(Acquired immunodeficiency Syndrome) Headache, night sweats, weight loss, fatigue, swollen lymph glands, fever, diarrhea, lung infections.
CHLAMYDIA
a white discharge, pain when urinating, itching and painful intercourse.
GENITAL HERPES
Genital itching and burning, a watery discharge, painful urination and weepy sores in the vulva or vagina that take a few days or weeks to heal. The nerve endings around these ulcers become inflamed and there is a lot of pain. Chronic herpes upsets the nervous system, resulting in anxiety and depression as well as frustration and a feeling of low self worth.
GENITAL WARTS
Single clusters of warts causes by the papilloma virus grow around the vagina, anus and vulva. It is believed that the same virus is responsible for cervical dysplasia whereby abnormal tissue is formed in the cervix. It may be a precancerous condition of the cervix.
A pap smear or sample of cervical tissue should be undertaken to establish a diagnosis.
GONORRHEA
Frequent and painful urination, cloudy vaginal discharge, abnormal uterine bleeding, pelvic inflammation and vaginal itching. Females often show no symptoms and usually transmit this disease to unsuspecting males especially without the protection of a condom.
PELVIC INFLAMMATORY DISEASE(PID)
A purulent vaginal discharge with fever and lower abdominal pain.
SYPHILLIS
Sores in the vulva or vagina, a rash, patches of flaking tissue, a fever, sore throat and sores in the mouth or anus. It is contracted through physical contact such as kissing.
TRICHONOMIASIS
Vaginal itching and pain, with a watery foamy greenish or yellow odourless discharge.
Controlling Prostaglandins to reduce inflammation, swelling, water retention, fever & pain
All tissues in the body have pre-programmed responses that are activated by prostaglandins or messengers. Certain groups of them are responsible for creating or reversing the effects of inflammation associated with: swelling, itching, heat (fever and hot flushes), redness (erythema) and pain. They also affect vaginal tissue and play a major role in controlling the effects of premenstrual disorders and weight gain due to water retention. They can affect the nervous system as well as the way you feel.
We usually blame hormones like estrogen for these types of problems that occur in females in later life but some argue that it happens due to a lack of estrogen and others insist that too much estrogen is causing it. Who can you believe? There is another guilty party: prostaglandins. These substances act like hormones and the group known as PGE1, PGE2 & PGE3 are associated with pain, redness, itching and swelling. As most of our ailments trouble us with these symptoms it would make sense to link up the common factor in conditions that affect men and women regardless of their hormonal make up: headaches and migraines, sore muscles & joints, gout & arthritis, inflamed and ulcerous sores, acne and pimples with red swollen bumps, internal abdominal pains, bad moods and many more.
Could we get rid of these ailments by simply eating different foods? Many diets are prescribed for certain reasons but if you can understand the characteristics of PGE1, PGE2 & PGE3, the dietary regimen included will make sense to you and it will be easy to follow. As the condition improves you can alter your current medications or stop taking some of them but that must be discussed with your doctor and only when he is satisfied with your progress.
Uncontrolled prostaglandin activity can make your life a misery and most of the medicines you take are dealing with the negative effects of PGE2. It produces an inflammatory response when it is to required fight an infection or deal with an injury but sometimes too much of it circulates in the body .It causes sodium retention of the cells resulting in bloating, weight gain and increased blood pressure. Swelling around joints causes aggravation to arthritis and nerve endings under pressure cause pain and headaches. Too much histamine is produced and the body becomes over reactive. PGE2 runs rampant when fatty acid metabolism is faulty. The correct diet and food supplements can definitely help to remedy the situation in the long term for management of chronic diseases.
PGE1 and PGE3 are the good guys and their action is to reverse the inflammation. To enhance their effectiveness, and to reduce adverse reactions anywhere in the body, this special diet must to be followed and all the appropriate food supplements should be taken in larger quantities than the RDA until the inflammation subsides.
